NAV and Business Central Making Tax Digital

January update for MTD

With the upcoming legislation for Making Tax Digital, we have been working closely with Microsoft on the compliance updates to Dynamics NAV and Dynamics Business Central. In December, Microsoft released their solution for testing. There are a few minor errors which are due to be fixed for a release at the beginning of February. These will need to be tested and approved by Her Majesty Customs and Excise (HMCE). We know enough now to give an update on what is involved and how it affects our customers.

Supported Versions of NAV and Business Central

Microsoft support NAV 2015 onwards and Business Central; if you are on one of these versions and are up to date with your enhancement you will be entitled to the updates free of charge.

If you have a current support contract with us, we are happy to add/merge the objects as required. We have a detailed process in place to perform this work and will be scheduling work to commence in the second half of February, following the updates from Microsoft. We will be contacting you to schedule your testing and putting the updates into your live databases.

For our supported customers, we will also be issuing detailed guidance on how to set it all up and use it nearer the time as well as providing free webinars which will give you the chance for Q&A.

Companies using NAV without support contracts

If you do not have a support contract but are up to date with your enhancement, the above service will be available typically for £250.00, however, we reserve the right to change this figure depending on any development in your system.

Companies without enhancement plans

If you are not up-to-date with an enhancement plan, please contact us to discuss your options.

NAV 2013R2 and Earlier

Due to changes in the NAV solution, some of the technologies required for the new functionality are not available. This means that the updates from Microsoft will not be applicable to your solution. We have been working with Microsoft and HMRC and our recommendation is as follows:

  1. Export from NAV and use a third-party tool as an interim solution. There are some solutions on the HMRC list that will allow you to submit a tax return via a spreadsheet. These solutions are only valid until the 2020 deadline.
  2. Contact us ASAP to discuss your options, which will likely revolve around an upgrade. As you can imagine, there are many companies in this situation and it is important to schedule the work now, even if it is for later in the year.

Special cases

As discussed in our previous Making Tax Digital blog, companies that submit group VAT or multiple companies with the same VAT registration number are not currently supported by the HMRC system. This means that the deadline for those companies is not until October.

For companies that are not on standard VAT, we anticipate that the updated will be applicable to you. However, because of the direct upload, you may wish to discuss your setup with our team of experts to make sure that you are ready to submit the correct figures.

Not one of our customers?

If you are not one of our customers, we are of course happy to help. With over 250 years of combined experience with Microsoft Dynamics products, our team has been working with HMRC and Microsoft and would be happy to discuss your options.
